Hunting Knife Sheath

my great-grandfather’s IXL hunting knife?
I am in possession of my great grandfathers hunting knife. he was born in 1895 and this was his first hunting knife so he probably got it around 1905. On the blade right next to the hand guard is a guy with a weird hat riding a horse and it says “the real IXL knife” below that it says “the hunters companion” to the left of that it says ” G. wostenholm & son” below that it says ” washington works”. the handle is skinny and is made of some type of antler. the sheath feels like leather and say in gold letters “IXL” and has a golden band around the top. it came with a canvas-like sheath that the leather one goes into and it has a thing that allows it to hang off a belt. any info would help.
i would like more info about it, what it’s called and how much is it worth
I am not an expert on British knives, but I did a quick check and think that the knife you have may be considerably older than you suspect. G. Wostenholm & Son built knives in Sheffield, England, and based on your description it may have been built in the mid-1800s. The guy with the weird hat is likely an image of General Zachary Taylor (12th president of the United States). These knives are collectible and the value would depend on the condition and desirability ($100 to $3000 according to a quick look).
My advise to you is to do a web search to find a forum devoted the these knives, take some good digital images and seek the advise of an expert in British knives. Just a suggestion, don’t send the knife to someone for appraisal–take it in person.
